Remember, Honor, Support: Observing Memorial Day with Purpose

By Perry White, Project Manager

Memorial Day is a meaningful day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women—along with their families—who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. At Netsmart, we take pride in our Veterans Associate Resource Group, NetVets, composed of veterans and supporters committed to supporting those who serve. This Memorial Day, our NetVets team has organized several initiatives to pay tribute—including planting flags, hosting a blood drive and displaying a POW/MIA Missing tribute. In this post, we'll explore the significance of these activities and their importance to both our community and our company.

Planting Flags for Fallen Heroes

One of Memorial Day's most iconic traditions is the planting of flags on the graves of fallen soldiers. This act serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance and gratitude for those who sacrificed everything for our freedom. Beyond cemeteries, many participate in the national "Flags for Forgotten Soldiers" movement, which raises awareness for veterans affected by PTSD and those who have taken their own lives. At Netsmart, we honor these brave individuals by lining our headquarters with flags—a tribute to their resilience, sacrifice and dedication.

Giving Back Through Blood Donation

For many veterans, service extends beyond the battlefield—often continuing through acts of community support. Blood donation is a simple yet powerful way to make a meaningful impact. In this season of remembrance, your contribution takes on added significance, helping to save lives in honor of those who sacrificed so much. Organizing a blood drive before Memorial Day offers the NetVets community and all Netsmart associates an opportunity to get involved, showing camaraderie, sacrifice and compassion. Many veterans have seen firsthand the critical need for blood, whether on deployment or at home. By participating, we carry forward the spirit of service and make a tangible difference.

Honoring My Friend, 1st Lt. Ken Ballard

In 2004, I experienced the devastating loss of my best friend and college roommate, 1st Lieutenant Ken Ballard, who was killed in action in Najaf, Iraq. To honor his memory, I donate blood regularly. Whenever I see the Missing Man Table, I think of Ken—his bravery and sacrifice. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the selfless service of individuals like him. Giving blood is my way of giving back, just as he gave everything to protect our country.

The Fallen Soldier Tribute

The Fallen Soldier tribute is a solemn ceremony that recognizes those who are still missing or have been taken prisoner. A reserved table displays symbols representing their sacrifice—an empty chair, an inverted glass, a white cloth, a single red rose, a lighted candle, a lemon slice, salt and a red ribbon. Each element symbolizes hope, mourning and remembrance. As a member of NetVets, this tribute personally reminds me of the profound impact service members have and the importance of never forgetting their sacrifices.

Whether you're planting flags, reflecting quietly or spending time with a veteran in your life, I hope you take a moment to honor their memory and the true meaning of Memorial Day. At Netsmart, we are committed to supporting our veterans today and every day.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis related to military service, please call or text 988 for 24/7 assistance or visit the veterans' resource page for support.
